You can make your own bagels, in your own kitchen with simple ingredients! All you need is 5 basic ingredients to make these amazing Easy Homemade Bagels!
I was always intimidated by the idea of making homemade bagels. Fresh bagels from the bakery are my favorite and I thought I would never come even close to making them that good at home. Making the dough, boiling each bagel, then baking them.. It seems like a lot but I promise you that it’s really not! These are absolutely AMAZING and I may honestly never get store-bought bagels again!
BAGEL DOUGH INGREDIENTS
Another amazing thing about these bagels is that you only need a few ingredients!
all-purpose flour
warm water
instant dry yeast
brown or coconut sugar
sea salt
egg for an egg wash
HOW TO MAKE EASY HOMEMADE BAGELS FROM SCRATCH
The process of making the dough is really simple, almost the same as making pizza dough! In a bowl of standing mixer with a dough hook attachment, mix the warm water, yeast and sugar. (If using active dry yeast remember to dissolve them. Simply mix the yeast with warm water, sugar and oil and let it stand to activate for about 5 minutes)
Then, add flour and salt. Mix using the dough hook on a low speed or with a spatula until dough comes together. If the dough doesn’t stick together, add more water. If it’s too wet add a little more flour.
Knead for a few minutes on a lightly floured surface or continue with the dough hook. Poke it with your finger as it should slowly bounce back. Shape into a ball, place in a lightly greased bowl, cover and let it sit in a warm place for minimum of one hour. I like to lightly heat up an oven, turn it off and place the bowl inside. The dough should double in size.
HOW TO SHAPE BAGELS
Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. Press your index finger through the center of each ball to make a hole about 2 inches in diameter. I found a great video that takes you through the whole process. You can see how the bagels are shaped at 4:13.
BAGEL WATER BATH
Boiling bagels sets the crust before it goes in the oven. Meaning they won’t rise a lot which gives bagels an amazing dense texture.
If you prefer a softer texture, boil the bagels just for a minute per side. I personally love more dense interior and thicker crust and boil bagels for 2-3 minutes each side. Make sure to add some honey or maple syrup to the bath, It gives the bagels beautiful brown color!
HOW TO BAKE BAGELS
Brush boiled bagels with the egg wash on top and around the sides. Sprinkle the bagel seasoning on top. Bake for 25 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow bagels to cool on the baking sheets.
HOW TO FREEZE BAGELS
My favorite way to keep the bagels fresh is freezing them! Once the bagels are completely cool, slice them in half and place them in freezer zip lock bags. Try to squeeze air out as you close the bag. They will keep in the freezer for several months. When ready to eat, simple pop both halves in the toaster!
BAGEL BAR BRUNCH
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love bagels! These homemade everything bagels are perfect to make for brunches and get-togethers! Great for upcoming Easter or Mother’s Day brunch!
WHAT TO SERVE WITH BAGELS
Really anything that you like! These are some of my favorites
variety of cream cheeses
avocado
smoked wild caught salmon
sliced tomatoes
sliced radish
red onion, thinly sliced
spinach or arugula
dill and chives
